Short answer: yes, you can lay artificial grass on almost any Australian balcony — but the job lives or dies on two things the backyard version never has to worry about: drainage and heat. Get the water flowing to the existing balcony drain and pick a yarn that doesn’t turn into a hotplate on a 38°C Perth afternoon, and a balcony lawn will sit happily for years. Get either wrong and you’ll have puddles after rain or grass you can’t stand on in January.

Will artificial grass work on my balcony?
Three balcony types cover most Australian apartments and units, and each one changes how you fix the grass down:
| Balcony surface | Main challenge | Best fixing method |
|---|---|---|
| Tiled, with a floor drain or fall | Keeping the drain clear | Loose-lay or perimeter tape; never block the drain |
| Bare concrete slab | No drainage path | Drainage underlay/shockpad, grass cut to fall toward the edge |
| Rental (any surface) | Must be removable, no damage | Interlocking turf tiles or a single loose-cut piece |
The one rule that applies to every balcony: don’t pierce the waterproofing membrane. Balcony slabs are sealed to stop water reaching the apartment below, so no screws, no nails, no glue that bonds permanently to the surface. Everything below works without breaking that seal.
Measuring and how much you’ll need
Measure the length and width at the widest points and add about 5 cm to each edge for trimming. A typical unit balcony of 3 m × 2 m works out to 6 m² of turf. Artificial grass is usually sold off rolls 2 m or 4 m wide, so a narrow balcony often comes off a single strip with no joins — one of the quiet advantages of a small space.
If your balcony is wider than the roll, plan the seam to run away from the door and the direction people walk, and make sure the pile on both pieces leans the same way or the join will catch the light. Want to sanity-check the spend against real turf first? Our artificial vs real grass cost calculator handles the maths.
Drainage: the part people get wrong
A backyard drains into the soil. A balcony drains to a single point or over the edge, and your grass has to let water get there. Good-quality turf has perforated backing — small drainage holes across the whole sheet — so rain passes straight through rather than pooling on top.
On a tiled balcony with a drain, the floor already slopes toward that drain (the “fall”). Lay the grass straight over the tiles and keep the turf clear of the drain grate so water still escapes. Loose-lay is usually enough; the weight of the grass holds it.
On a bare concrete slab with no drain, add a drainage underlay or foam shockpad with channels underneath, and cut the grass so water runs toward the balcony’s open edge. Suppliers rate permeable turf backings at high flow rates — tens of litres per minute per square metre — which is far more than Australian rain delivers, so the limit is almost always the path to the edge, not the grass itself.
Heat: choose the yarn before you choose the colour
This is the big one for north- and west-facing balconies. Artificial grass absorbs sun, and in full summer sun the surface can get hot enough to be uncomfortable underfoot — turf suppliers and independent testing have measured synthetic lawns well above air temperature on clear hot days, sometimes into the 60s°C range on dark, dense piles. That doesn’t make it unusable, but it changes what you buy:
- Pick a lighter, “heat-reduction” or olive-toned yarn rather than a very dark green — manufacturers now sell yarns designed to run cooler in Australian sun.
- A quick rinse with the hose drops the surface temperature straight away on the hottest afternoons.
- Afternoon shade — an awning, a planter, or a shade sail — does more than any product spec.
If the balcony faces south or east and gets morning sun only, heat is rarely an issue and you can choose on looks alone.
Fixing it down without damaging the balcony
For a rental, the safest options are interlocking turf tiles (they clip together over the surface and lift out when you move) or a single piece cut exactly to the balcony and left loose — the walls stop it moving. Both come up cleanly and leave the membrane untouched.
For a balcony you own, you can tidy the edges with outdoor-grade double-sided turf tape around the perimeter, or a bead of outdoor adhesive at the very edges only. Keep adhesive off the main field so the grass can still be lifted for a clean. On higher floors, tape or weight the edges regardless — wind funnels along apartment towers and will lift an unsecured corner.
The cut-and-lay steps themselves are the same as any install; our step-by-step artificial grass installation guide covers trimming, joining and securing in detail.
Keeping a balcony lawn clean
Sweep or hose off leaves and dust as needed — a balcony collects more airborne grit than a backyard. If you’ve got a dog using the balcony, rinse regularly and use an enzyme cleaner to stop odour building in a space with no soil to break waste down; our guide to cleaning and maintaining artificial grass has the full routine, and if the balcony is mainly a toilet run for the dog, choose a pet-rated turf from our pet-friendly turf guide first.
Frequently asked questions
Does artificial grass damage a balcony?
Not if it’s laid loose or taped at the edges and the drain is kept clear. Damage only happens when people glue over the whole surface or screw down edging and break the waterproof membrane — avoid both and the balcony is unaffected.
Can I put artificial grass on a rental balcony?
Yes — use interlocking turf tiles or a single loose-cut piece so it lifts out when you leave. Both are removable and leave no marks, which keeps it within most tenancy agreements (check yours for anything about floor coverings).
How do I stop balcony artificial grass getting too hot?
Choose a lighter heat-reduction yarn, add afternoon shade, and hose it down on the hottest days. South- and east-facing balconies rarely get hot enough to matter.
Does water drain through it on a solid concrete balcony?
The grass drains, but the water still needs somewhere to go. On a slab without a drain, add a drainage underlay and cut the grass so water runs to the open edge; on a tiled balcony with a drain, just keep the grate clear.
The short version
Match the fixing method to your balcony type, keep the existing drain clear, pick a cooler yarn for a sunny aspect, and never break the membrane. Do that and a balcony lawn is one of the lowest-maintenance upgrades a unit can have — green all year, no mowing, and gone in an afternoon if you ever need to lift it.
